MPEG-1 Audio Layer III
MP3 is a coding format for digital audio that uses a form of lossy data compression. It allows for major reductions in file size compared to uncompressed audio while sounding like a faithful reproduction to most listeners.

History & Origin
Developed by the Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) and standardized in the early 90s. It sparked the digital music revolution in the late 90s and 2000s.
Internal Structure
An MP3 file consists of a series of MP3 frames. Each frame includes a header and a data block. The compression works by discarding sounds that are imperceptible to the human hearing system (perceptual coding).
Advantages
- Ubiquitous: Supported by virtually every audio player in existence.
- Size: Compresses audio to about 1/10th the size of a WAV file.
- ID3 Tags: Supports metadata for artist, title, album art, etc.
Disadvantages
- Lossy: Audio quality is permanently lost during compression.
- Latency: Not suitable for real-time audio interaction due to encoding delay.
- Bitrate limits: Caps at 320kbps.
