The Importance of Mime-Type Validations in Security Testing

The Security Gap

One of the most common vulnerabilities in web applications is Unrestricted File Upload. When developers trust user input—specifically the file extension—they open the door to Remote Code Execution (RCE).

MIME Types vs. Magic Numbers

A MIME type (e.g., image/jpeg) is a label sent by the browser. It is easily forged by an attacker.

Magic Numbers are the digital fingerprint embedded in the file header.

• PNG: 89 50 4E 47
• PDF: 25 50 44 46

Defense in Depth

Robust security requires a layered approach:

1. Validate Extension: First pass, check .jpg.
2. Validate Magic Numbers: Read the first 4-8 bytes of the file stream on the server.
3. Virus Scan: Pass the stream through a malware detection engine.
4. Sandboxing: Store uploaded files on a separate domain (e.g., user-content.com) to prevent cookie theft and XSS attacks.
